Black Sunday (1977) Screening | Israel & Palestine Analysis | “In A Way She’s Your Creation Kabakov”

Tonight I will be screening & discussing Black Sunday by John Frankenheimer. This is ‘not’ a “Movie Night” type screening as it will be necessary to stop the film at certain points to discuss what has happened. For the sake of maintaining the continuity of the film & not creating audio crossover…I’ll avoid speaking during pivotal moments & just pause as necessary.

I never hear anyone discuss this incredibly relevant film by John Frankheimer…perhaps even more relevant today than it was in 1977, Black Sunday is based on a Thomas Harris novel, one of only ‘two’ he wrote that wasn’t about the Hannibal Lecter series…very odd coincidence, as this was Harris’ debut novel dealing with Israel & Palestine conflicts ‘coming home to roost’ in the USA. Without saying too much, the film involves a plot by a group calling themselves “Black September” to kill over 80,000 people using a Goodyear blimp flying over during Super Bowl Sunday…hence “Black Sunday”.

Their stated purpose?

For Americans to “share in the suffering” for funding Israel’s forced occupation of Palestine…

In order to prevent this attack from occurring, Israeli intelligence (Mossad) works with the FBI to find a member of the Black September (based on the real Black September Organization or BSO). There is an American veteran, operating as a mole with the fictional BSO.

What has occurred between 1977 and 2025?

This film was produced nearly 50 years ago and the world doesn’t seem to understand what Israel is any better today than it did when this film was created.

We don’t seem to understand the disillusioned minds some of our veterans are left with after our country sends them into countless conflicts they later learn were rooted in something ‘morally questionable’ at best…particularly during the Vietnam era, many were left with physical & spiritual injuries that few were willing or able to treat.

How would a Vietnam Veteran, particularly one who had been held in a POW camp, be convinced to kill over 80,000 Americans in an act of protest for a Palestinian movement?

How does the mind of a ‘resistance fighter’ transition into a ‘terrorist’ where the lives of innocent people are considered acceptable losses?

How does the mind of a ‘country’ transition into a ‘terrorist state’ where the lives of innocent people are considered ‘acceptable losses’?

“Munich” by Steven Spielberg covers an ‘actual’ Black September event…involving the killing of 11 Israeli athletes. What it doesn’t discuss in detail, but John Frankheimer’s “Black Sunday” does is how the mind of a ‘terrorist’ develops over time. Frankheimer focuses on Dahlia, the main ‘planner’ of the Super Bowl event in the film. There is a pivotal moment in the middle where her dossier is read to the Mossad agent hunting her…it will serve as a point of discussion after the film is over
