Mary Holland reflected on the measles outbreaks in California (2015) and New York (2019), noting the recurring push to mandate the MMR vaccine and repeal religious exemptions—a pattern nearly repeated in Hawaii. She praised Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s distinct approach during those times.

Unlike the standard narrative of lockdowns and multiple MMR doses, Kennedy emphasized personal choice. “He said MMR can prevent measles, which is true, but left it up to individuals,” Holland recalled.
Holland highlighted the vaccine’s complexity: “It’s three live viruses—something nature doesn’t throw at you simultaneously. It’s the only option out there and somewhat effective, but it’s not without risks.”

She admired Kennedy’s honesty, a rarity among leaders. “No health official or president has so clearly framed it as a personal decision during an outbreak,” she said. For Holland, Kennedy’s stance—acknowledging both the vaccine’s potential and its challenges while prioritizing freedom—marked a significant departure from the norm.
