This service call the customer had run out of salt (KCl) and exhausted the resin bed. So our product water was coming up as the standing hardness. I added the salt that he ordered and left a small (and light reserve). I tested the water to show that our product water was testing bad (hard). For Cx's who have trouble with the standard 40+ # bags of salt (NaCl or KCl) I mention a helpful tip I learned from other stops where you can dump the heavier bags into a large bucket (or have someone do so) or bin and scoop over smaller amounts at a time. Programming needed to be adjusted as the hardness has increased from what it was testing in the fall/winter months. He also had some higher than normal use which explained the salt being used up faster. I am a fan of the time changes. In the fall I look at it as an extra hour of sleep and in the spring I see it as an extra hour of sunlight. Win win. The softener for this instance only requires an extra 2-3 gallons of water to restore the mineral bed. Once the system is programmed correctly and salt level is maintained (adding once low) fill to about half full. It will work and function automatically. During the annual service I will sanitize the system. The softener valve (advanced through all positions) the mineral bedding, under-bedding, brine tank (and brine line). This should be done periodically on these systems too.
