Unboxing the Losi 1/10 Scale 22S Ready-To-Run Sprint Car

Next to video games, the other hobby I have done for most of my life has been racing radio controlled cars. I got my very first car when I was a freshman in high school, and have competed at local, regional, and national events ever since. I originally got my start on a high-banked dirt oval at Trackside Hobbies in Milwaukee. Over the years, the track changed from a dirt oval, to carpet oval, carpet on-road, and dirt off-road, but my love for the hobby has never waned. In recent years, I found it more challenging to be able to enjoy the hobby just from a time standpoint, which is why I am glad Losi has just released their 22S Ready-to-Run Sprint car, which is set up perfectly as a spec class racer.

I ordered my car from Go Fast Hobbies in Indiana, and Go Fast isn't just their name it's also how they handle their shipping! I was extremely impressed with how they handled my order, and they have definitely earned my repeat business. Make sure you check them out at gofasthobbies.com.

Out of the box, the car comes completely assembled, the body is pre-painted and decaled, and all the electronics are pre-installed. There are two different versions of this model, one that comes with a battery pack and charger, and one without. Since the battery that comes with the one version is one of three legal batteries for the class of my local track that is the version I went with.

The car itself is based loosely on the Team Losi Racing 22 two-wheel drive off-road buggy. It shares quite a few components with that platform, but the S designation indicates that it is more aligned with their sport model of that chassis which was available as a short course truck. As such, certain cost saving measures have been incorporated into the vehicle, things like plastic shock caps instead of aluminum, the type of aluminum that the chassis itself is made from, and a few other odds and ends.

The 22S Sprint includes a Spectrum 3300 KV brushless motor. I absolutely love this as I won't have to worry about motor maintenance, motors wearing out, or anything like that. The other big class right now in dirt oval, the Traxxas Mudboss class, uses a 550 brushed motor which requires break-in, tuning, cleaning, and they wear out fairly quickly. The 22S Sprint won’t have those issues. The spec rules for our track require that you use the stock motor and speed controller, and I'm okay with this as I believe it's fairly similar, if not identical, to the Dynamite RC Short Course combo that was available a number of years ago. I ran that system quite a bit and it actually worked well.

At first glance there are two things that I am not a huge fan of with this car. First of all I wish the decals were not pre-installed, especially with a pre-painted body. It's going to be hard enough to pick out your own car in a field where the body's all have the same paint schemes, and pulling the decals can leave a lot of gunk and residue behind.

Next, I'm not the biggest fan of the IC5 connector that the battery and speed controller comes with. I understand it permits greater current flow compared to the IC3 connector, but to use with my existing Spectrum 2100 s charger I now have to buy almost $30 in charge adapters for a 1/10 scale vehicle. Not cool.

I cannot wait to unbox and test this out at our local track. Make sure you check out our new dedicated RC channel, RoXolid RC, and give us a follow there.
