Water to wine (2:1-11).Healing the royal official’s son (4:46-54).Healing the paralytic (5:1-15).Feeding the 5000 (6:1-14).Walking on water (6:16-24).Healing a man born blind (9:1-7).Raising Lazarus (11:1-45).The catch of fish (21:6).
Yeshua turned water into wine in relative privacy, not many saw it. Even the bride and groom didn’t know it had happened. Then Yeshua heals from a distance, with the Nobleman’s son. Now, in Ch 5, Yeshua will heal in person.
The truth of the matter is that we do not know what feast this is, however there were only 3 of the 7 feasts of the LORD that required all Jews to be in Jerusalem. Passover (Pesach in the spring), Shavuot or Feast of Weeks or Pentecost (in the spring), and Sukkot or Feast of Tabernacles (in the fall).
2 Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool, which is called in Hebrew, Bethesda, having five porches.
The holy anointing oil had five ingredients: four spices mixed with olive oil. (EXO 30). The holy incense also had five ingredients: four spices mixed with salt. There are five Books of Torah. The Hebrew letter Hey has a numerical value of five, hey says behold…Five loaves fed five thousand, leaving twelve baskets leftover. There are five divisions to the Psalms. Five is indicative of being filled, prepared, and empowered to go forth on whatever mission The LORD has given us to do.
The idea is that there was a legend that this happened. Whether this actually happened is highly suspect. At least not from the LORD GOD. What kind of grace and mercy would that be? In any event the legend was enough to draw crowds of people with various illnesses, diseases and infirmities all waiting for that one moment when they could be the first one in the pool and the hope of being healed. We are also not told how long this actually went on. No historian at that time or later ever wrote of this happening, including Josephus.
DEU 2:14 Israel entered its calling after a delay of 38 years: Now the time that it took for us to come from Kadesh-barnea until we crossed over the brook Zered, was thirty-eight years…
They looked at their reality and the worldly view rather than through their spiritual eyes. This man was doing the same thing, as we will see. I am not saying John selected this to make that tie, but it is a fair application for us to see.
7 The sick man answered HIM, “Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up; but while I am coming, another steps down before me.”
