Ontario Premier reacts to Trump tariffs

"Is that still the position that the relationship is over or is there some movement? Well, I think there’s always movement when you sit down and negotiate. It’s no different than when a big family sits at the table. They may disagree on a few things, but at the end of the day, they’re still united. And that’s how we feel with our best friends and allies.

Make no mistake, Canadians love Americans, they love the U.S. And I do too. I spent 20 years of my life there.

You know, Mr. Premier, it strikes me because the last time we spoke, you mentioned the possibility of threatening electricity, right? And there was a very strong, very forceful, very defensive stance you took when we spoke a couple of weeks ago. It’s a different tone I’m hearing from you tonight.

I wonder if that’s because you think all this will just get resolved and fade away. I guess what I’m getting at, sir, is your tone now is very different from a couple of weeks ago. Why?

Well, it’s fair enough because we didn’t know what was happening. We just kept hearing about the 51st state. That we were going to be hit with tariffs. And now the tone has changed on both sides. And again, that’s because of negotiating in good faith, building a relationship that I feel Secretary Lutnik and I have.

We’ll keep sitting down and work towards getting a USCA or a USMCA deal to give everyone certainty, and you’ll see the markets rise. If that happens, you’ll see more investment, more consumer confidence, and that’s what we believe is the right thing to do."
