Plato - Charmides

In the Charmides, Socrates serves as a philosophical guide, while Charmides and Critias are part of Plato's extended family. Charmides is Plato's uncle (on his mother's side). Critias is Charmides' cousin and mentor, and he is also Plato's relative. He was a prominent figure in the history of Athens, later becoming one of the leaders of the Thirty Tyrants. This connection between their personal lives and philosophical discourse makes the dialogue even more meaningful. Both Critias and Charmides later became prominent members of the Thirty Tyrants, an oligarchic regime established after Athens' defeat in the Peloponnesian War in 404 BCE. This connection makes the discussion of moderation particularly pressing.
