My son said "All my friends are getting phones"

Hes in 5th grade

I knew this day would come.

I said no. Told him why, and let him know at his age it will only take away from who he could be.

It's not that phones are all bad, it's that they are incredibly powerful.

I see what happens to full grown men when they get sucked down toxic content loops on the internet. And their brains are fully developed.

It's not that I think that would definitely happen to my son, it's that it can happen to anyone.

We did not have that ability as children and not every content creator on the internet is trying to do the best thing for our kids.

"Letting my kids fail, make mistakes, and figure life out" is necessary. I do this in controlled settings like jiu jitsu, chores, responsibilities, and personal relationships...

The stakes are too high online when someone's mind can be taken so easily.

There will be a massive divide over the next years with children who have been raised by screens and children who have been raised in real life.

There will be confident, outgoing, socially mature, and emotionally mature people who will lead the world. That's what I'm raising my kids to be. They get that in the real world.

There will also be millions of kids who are stressed out, anxious, can't look people in the eyes, don't know how to shake a hand, and follow everything they're told. That won't be my kids.

By no means am I saying I do not want my kids to be skilled with tech and the internet. Social media has changed my life and I intend to teach my kids those same skills. But because I invested in myself and learned those skills myself, I can teach them when the time is right.

If you have a different approach I'm not saying you're wrong or saying you're a bad person. I'm just sharing my life and how I choose to raise my kids.

This segment was taken for my most recent podcast episode of The Rising Father Podcast.
