Week 10 Tutorial: It’s Time to Take the Land! (Deuteronomy 27–34; Psalm 91; Joshua 1–19)
Week 10 Readings of our 2025 Chronological Bible-in-a-Year Reading Challenge have us finishing off the Book of Deuteronomy (bidding a fond farewell to Moses) and heading full force into Canaan with Joshua.
In this tutorial, following a brief interview with Reuben, one of our participants from this year’s challenge, Chad encourages us to pay special attention this week to the Song of Moses in Deuteronomy 32. While difficult to read on one hand, owing to it’s predominantly doom-and-gloom messaging, this prophetic song contains content that will be drawn upon repeatedly by Israel’s Psalmists, Prophets and Apostles through the rest of the Bible, as they echo its language, metaphors and themes. As both Israel’s law-giver and arguably her greatest prophet, there is no denying the fundamental and foundational role Moses played in both biblical, and human, history.
Chad then proceeds to bring us into the Book of Joshua, with its welcome change of pace and scenery, as the Israelite nation finally leave the wilderness, cross the River Jordan and begin their conquest of the Promised Land. Keep an eye out this week for the subtle comparisons drawn between Moses and Joshua, both their similarities and differences, and be sure to access a map of the tribal-land allocations in Canaan … it’ll help you make more sense of Chapters 13–19!
For a suggested reading plan this week, consider the following five sittings:
- Deuteronomy 27–32; Psalm 91: Covenant Consequences
- Deuteronomy 33–34; Joshua 1–4: Moses Dies and Joshua Leads
- Joshua 5–8: Conquests Begin
- Joshua 9–12: Seven Years of Military Success
- Joshua 13–19: Land Allocated to Tribes
