On the first day of the battle, the regiment moved to the front lines and fought until 2 pm. The 74th, an all-German regiment, faced several changes in leadership during the conflict. Colonel Adolph Von Hartung was wounded, prompting Lt. Col. Theobald Von Mitzel to assume command. After Lt. Col. Von Mitzel was captured during the retreat, Captain Henry Krauseneck took over but was later accused of cowardice and resigned in January 1864.
