Modern Day Disco: Disco Lives
"Modern Day Disco" II Stellar Radio
The Night Disco Died
In the description of "Disco's Free", my first disco song, I described the interesting history of Disco. I was surprised to learn that Disco is not a genre or dance move but it was a movement by marginalized people but brought together a lot of other people who embraced the message of unity and acceptance. My research showed that it ended largely due to a DJ in Chicago putting on an event to destroy disco as he was a rock fan. It was called Disco Demolition Night (See "Disco Demolition Night below). I'm not a huge disco fan. In fact, I just created a few disco songs because someone in the comments asked about it. But, I am a HUGE fan of believing there's enough room for everyone and their interests. So, basically I think the DJ was a dick. I think it's a pretty good song and possibly a good dance song. I really appreciate those of you who take the time to leave a comment or emoji.

My little research helper sits right on the side of my computer and although I call him "Buddy", he is called Sider and he (it) is an awesome tool to have at your disposal. He helps me with my speling spelling too. Available for free on your Chrome browser. Here's a link that would help this channel and possibly help you with your speling spelling (ok Buddy!)

Research: What was Disco Demolition Night?
Key Details of Disco Demolition Night
Promotion and Context:
Disco Demolition Night was a significant event that took place on July 12, 1979, at Comiskey Park in Chicago, Illinois. It was organized by rock radio DJ Steve Dahl as a promotion aimed at eradicating disco music, which he and many others viewed as a threat to the rock genre. Here’s a breakdown of what happened:
Steve Dahl, known for his anti-disco stance, coordinated the event as a fun way to celebrate rock music and express disdain for disco culture, which was extremely popular at the time.
The promotion involved fans bringing disco records to the baseball game, where they could get in for a low price (often just 98 cents) if they brought a disco record.
The Event:
During a second game of a doubleheader between the Chicago White Sox and the Detroit Tigers, Dahl detonated a large crate filled with disco records in the outfield after the first game.
The explosion was intended to be a spectacle, but it led to chaotic scenes as fans rushed onto the field. This quickly escalated, resulting in a riot with fans tearing up the field, causing significant damage, and leading to the game being called off.
Cultural Impact:
Disco Demolition Night is often cited as a turning point in the music industry, symbolizing a backlash against the disco movement and showcasing a cultural shift towards rock music.
The event reflected the tension and division in American music and culture at the time, highlighting the polarization between different musical genres and audiences.
It marked the decline of disco's mainstream popularity, as many radio stations pivoted away from disco playlists shortly afterward.
Legacy
Disco Demolition Night is remembered as a controversial and chaotic event in music history. It serves as a cultural marker for the changing landscape of popular music in the late 1970s and is often discussed in contexts about music trends, genre conflicts, and cultural movements.
