The only way to say goodbye to anxiety
Friends, many people often complain, saying, "Sir, a year ago I had anxiety, then it went away, but now it’s back again. Six months ago, I had it, then for six months I was fine, and now it’s started again. I keep falling into anxiety repeatedly. I keep getting trapped in this cycle of mental distress." So, why does this anxiety keep coming back? We need to understand this a little. The reason it keeps recurring is that there’s a seed of anxiety within us. The root of anxiety is present inside us, and whenever this seed or root gets even a slight external trigger or stimulation, it activates.
When we keep diving into anxiety, when this phase keeps recurring, if we want this phase to end completely and for anxiety to be eradicated entirely, we need to destroy that seed, that root of anxiety. Now, the question arises: You’ve said we need to eliminate this root, but how do we identify what this root or seed of anxiety is? If we can truly understand this seed of anxiety, friends, we can succeed in completely eliminating our anxiety. So, how do we identify this root, this seed?
If you understand the reasons behind it and address those reasons correctly, you can free yourself from anxiety for your entire life. You can liberate yourself from psychological problems, from OCD, from panic, from depression—because you’ve fixed the root mechanism causing these issues. You’ve eliminated the cause. Now, another question often comes up: "Sir, is it really possible to completely eliminate the cause?" Yes, it is possible, and how is it possible? If you start recognizing the cause, if you begin to see it, if you start understanding it—once this awareness develops within you, once you begin identifying and understanding the cause—you can start eliminating it. And when that cause begins to disappear, you start coming out of anxiety, out of panic, out of OCD. You can become completely free from it—100% free.
So, please tell us quickly: How do we identify this seed, this root mechanism of anxiety? Let’s understand it. In the Bhagavad Gita, Arjuna experienced intense anxiety and panic, which is described in the first chapter. Why did he feel this way? Let’s explore that. When it was decided that there would be a war between the Kauravas and the Pandavas—the Mahabharata war, to be fought in Kurukshetra—both sides arrived with their armies. After reaching Kurukshetra, Arjuna said to Lord Krishna, "O Madhav, I want to see who is fighting on our side and who is fighting against us." So, Krishna took Arjuna’s chariot and positioned it between the two armies.
Arjuna looked at his side and then at the opposing side. When he saw the opposing army, he noticed his brothers, his uncles, his grandfather, his guru, his grandsons, and his sons—all standing there, ready to fight. He realized, "If I fight against them, they will die. If they die, I’ll bear the sin of destroying my own family." Seeing all this, Arjuna became extremely anxious and restless. He was overwhelmed with the thought of having to fight his own loved ones.
Now, let’s understand why Arjuna felt this anxiety—it’s here that we find the root of anxiety. His current task, his duty, was to fight the war. That was his responsibility. But his desire, his wish, was different—he didn’t want to fight against his own people. It’s not that he didn’t want to fight at all; he had fought many battles before. But here, he didn’t want to fight against his own family. That was his principle, his desire. Yet, the situation demanded that he take action against his wishes—he had to fight this war.
In life, when such a situation arises—where your desire is one thing, but the action or behavior required of you is the opposite—it creates anxiety. When your wish and your actions are in conflict, when circumstances force you to act against your desires, it causes distress. You’ve built certain principles in your mind, and you want to act according to them. But when you can’t, it leads to immense suffering.
For example, let’s say your desire is to become an IAS officer, but due to current circumstances, you’ve become a primary school teacher, a first-grade teacher, a second-grade teacher, or a third-grade teacher. Your wish is to be an IAS officer, but your work is something else. This gap between your desire and your reality creates anxiety. Or perhaps you want to work, but due to your present situation, you’re forced to stay at home. This causes anxiety because your mind can’t relax. You think, "I wasn’t born to sit at home. I didn’t study so hard just to stay idle or teach at a primary level. I studied to become an IAS officer."
This difference between your desire and your current situation—this gap—is what generates anxiety. Maybe you want to be a working woman, but your in-laws or family circumstances force you to be a housewife. This creates a constant feeling of suffocation and restlessness because you’re trying to change your current situation to match your desires. You don’t like your present reality; you reject it and resist it. But circumstances force you to act according to the situation, not your wishes. You’re doing things reluctantly—fulfilling family duties, teaching, or working somewhere you don’t want to—because your desire is different. You wanted to work in a specific company, city, or country, or study at a prestigious university, but you’re stuck where you are due to circumstances. This gap between your desires and your actions is what causes anxiety.
Now, there are two possibilities here. The first possibility is that you keep trying to align your actions with your desires. You constantly attempt to shift your present reality toward what you want, toward your principles. But because you can’t fully connect with your current work and are always striving to make it match your desires, it doesn’t happen. The circumstances you’re in right now are the truth—your desires aren’t. The reality is what you’re doing at this moment. If you reject this reality because of your desires and principles, it creates anxiety, overthinking, and panic.
This is exactly what happened to Arjuna. He said, "I don’t want to fight. I’ll have to kill them, and I don’t want to." He rejected his present reality, resisted it, and gave preference to his desires. This plunged him into anxiety and panic. This is the biggest root of anxiety: when you don’t like the work you’re doing due to circumstances because your desire is something else entirely.
The second possibility is this: if you adjust your desires to match your current situation, if you change your wishes according to your present reality and accept that "this situation, these circumstances, are the greatest truth," then you can’t change them. If you mold your desires to fit your circumstances and convince yourself, "What I have right now is my greatest desire, my ultimate truth—there’s no other reality for me," then you can completely free yourself from anxiety. This is because the circumstances you’re in are the will of existence. This is what was meant to happen in your life—it’s why these conditions exist.
In the Mahabharata, Krishna told Arjuna, "Certain circumstances have arisen in your life and in the lives of the Kauravas that make this war inevitable. It cannot be avoided. You cannot escape your duty, nor can they." The greatest reality of that moment was that Arjuna had to fight. The entire counseling of the Bhagavad Gita is about this: Krishna explains that the burden of desires Arjuna carries is imaginary, not aligned with the present reality. If you read all the chapters of the Gita, Krishna emphasizes that Arjuna’s desires don’t match his circumstances. The greatest truth of his life at that moment was the war in Kurukshetra—fighting the Kauravas was his highest duty.
So, in anxiety, if we adjust our desires to our present reality, if we accept it fully instead of measuring every situation against a fixed set of desires, we can overcome it. Don’t keep a rigid tape of desires and judge every situation by it, saying, "This doesn’t fit." Adjust the tape to the situation—if it’s 10 meters, make it 10 meters; if it’s 5 meters, make it 5 meters. Tell yourself, "What I have is enough. This is my desire." Then, friends, you’ll start coming out of anxiety completely.
No matter what house you live in, what job you do, or what situation you’re in, if you fully accept your present reality and align your desires with it, you’ll be free from anxiety. Krishna didn’t tell Arjuna, "If you’re so anxious, just follow your desires and run away from this war." Krishna could have fought the war himself or stopped it, but he didn’t. He didn’t encourage Arjuna to prioritize his desires or principles over his duty. Principles are valid in certain contexts, but they’re not universal laws. What was true 10 days ago may not be true today. If you cling to old ideas despite changing circumstances, it creates a mess in your life—that’s the seed of anxiety growing into a plant that leads to panic and mental distress.
Krishna didn’t tell Arjuna to abandon the war and follow his desires. Instead, he clarified that Arjuna’s principles were imaginary and needed updating to match the current reality. He inspired Arjuna to fight, not flee. In our lives, too, we sometimes think, "Maybe if I escape this situation, I’ll find peace." But peace doesn’t come from running away. Your current situation is your greatest truth, your biggest reality. If you adjust to it and accept it, there’s no greater joy, no greater freedom. This is the path to completely overcoming anxiety.
