Travel Post: The Sleep Hangover of a Red Eye Flight

When we flew to Maui, it was uncomfortable, but bearable.

We flew from Iowa, to Denver, and then from Denver, to Maui.

Denver was a nice little break along the way.

(Side note: boarding the second leg of the flight in Denver, I was on the jet bridge behind a teenager drinking a Celsius. All I could think was, “Wait, you want to be hyper-alert and awake for a long flight? Weird.”)

Flying back, it was an overnight (left at 5:30pm, Hawaii time) Red Eye that landed in Chicago.

(At 6:30am, which would be 1:30am Hawaii time.)

My wife bought a travel pillow, and slept for most of the flight.

My son fell asleep on her lap.

I drifted in and out of sleep after watching Spider-Man: No Way Home, and Beverly Hills Cop (two perfect movies, btw. No fat on either of them. Just lean and awesome.), and before going on a South Park kick.

Man, what a difference a few hours makes.

Denver to Maui?

Not too shabby.

Maui to Chicago?

Ugh.

Being sleep deprived sucks.

Being uncomfortable sucks.

Flying in economy sucks.

The meal, however?

Surprisingly decent.

Gotta give the airline credit for that one.

Anyway, as stated in the video, statistically, planes crash when either taking off, or landing.

I can’t imagine anything worse than sitting on a plane for 8 hours, and then crashing.

Best to treat tragedy and horror like a Band Aid, and tear it off quickly.
