Apatros Review Ep-0143: Night Ripper! [1986]

AR-0143: Remember the Soup Nazi, that legendary character from "Seinfeld"? Well, Larry Thomas, the actor who brought that infamously cranky chef to life, starred in a SOV [shot-on-video], first generation DTV [direct-to-video] slasher about a sadistic serial lady killer that has become a certified cult classic amongst fans of both DTV and SOV features.

Here Thomas plays one of the most entertainingly heroic creeps you'll ever hope to find - an ethical creep who has to help his friend protect himself and his model girlfriend from the "Night Ripper", a nasty Jill the Ripper style of killer who has a thing for brutally disemboweling fashion models. With surgical precision, of course, even though it don't look it.

While not anywhere near being a good film, for being one of the first slashers to be shot on video and released directly onto video, this one is interesting and has a professional look to it other SOV films simply can't match.

I personally saw this through a rip of the original American VHS, but last I heard this is on Blu-Ray, so that's good news, although this movie works best when viewed through a black plastic box loaded with magnetic tape...

My Grade: D+ [Disappointing]
