News April 1, 2025 /Attorney General Pam Bondi announced Tuesday that federal prosecutors plan to seek the death penalty for Luigi Mangione, who was accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson outside a New York City hotel in December.

Bondi said her decision was in line with a Day One memo she issued directing the Department of Justice to revive and expand the use of the federal death penalty after the Biden administration’s DOJ put a moratorium on it.
“Luigi Mangione’s murder of Brian Thompson — an innocent man and father of two young children — was a premeditated, cold-blooded assassination that shocked America,” Bondi said in a statement. “After careful consideration, I have directed federal prosecutors to seek the death penalty in this case as we carry out President Trump’s agenda to stop violent crime and Make America Safe Again.”

"Lion Cubs Meet Their Father for the First Time"

Four African lion cubs played with their father for the first time this morning at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park's Lion Camp. The nearly four-month-old lions spent time with their mother, Oshana, at the Lion Camp and had only visual contact with their father, Izu. Keeping the pride together is intended to promote the cubs' development.

"Lions are the only social cats. They live in a pride," said Tony Franceschiello, head zookeeper. "Our ultimate goal is to bring them together here as a group, as a pride. That's exactly what would happen in the wild. Oshana would raise her cubs on her own and, when they were old enough, would bring them back to the pride and introduce them, and everyone would be together."

The cubs, Ernest, Evelyn, Marion, and Miss Ellen, excitedly ran with Oshana into the grassy habitat this morning. Izu was the next to emerge and was patient while his four cubs interacted with him for the first time. The cubs took turns with Izu, jumping, climbing, sniffing, and even playfully swatting at his tail.

The cubs are described by the zookeepers as active, vocal, curious, and feisty, each with their own distinctive personality. Adult lionesses can weigh between 122 and 180 kilograms at around three years of age, while male lions can weigh between 150 and 250 kilograms.
