Have Hamas Just Wrecked Netanyahu’s Gaza Dreams For Good?

Right, so have Hamas taken a course of action that put Israel in a bit of an awkward position? Well they might well have done. Israel’s entire reasoning for going back in to Gaza was to finish the job, total victory, destroy Hamas, but what if Hamas are no longer in control in Gaza? What if they relinquish power to someone else? What if they are not calling the shots anymore, who exactly will it be that Israel would be waging war on at that point in which case and how would the justify it when it is all supposed to be about Hamas?
This set of events has come about as the result of an all new Egyptian plan to try and restore the ceasefire in Gaza, a plan that involves replacing Hamas just as their widely accepted Gaza reconstruction plan involved and as was the case with that plan, Hamas had accepted it. Now with this new plan, Hamas could cease to be the governing entity of Gaza a lot sooner, not gone completely, not disarming, but a step in the right direction as far as Israel’s claimed goals go. Those goals are a whole lot of hot air though as we know, Israel have not accepted this new plan either to little surprise and even less media attention, but their excuses going forwards are going to be a lot more hollow now surely?
Right, so Egypt, have once again come up with a plan, once more positioned themselves as the key mediator with regards to Hamas and Israel, have put forward a new plan with regards to Gaza, a detailed ceasefire plan this time aimed at halting the violence Israel have returned to being the drivers of, restoring the ceasefire and establishing a new political framework for Gaza without Hamas.
The plan calls for the release immediately of 5 Israeli hostages, including Israeli-American Edan Alexander in the hope that this release alleviates US pressure on all sides, this release possibly leading Donald Trump to losing interest in Israel and Gaza, it really does say a lot when removing the so called leader of the free world from the equation is seen as a positive doesn’t it, but there we are.
During that first week humanitarian aid would be let back into Gaza, expanded as this would need to be to make up for the weeks of famine and starvation Israel has inflicted on Gaza.
At the end of the first week, phase 2 of the original ceasefire plan would then be implemented, so there’s the stumbling block for Israel for all to see, Netanyahu cannot end this war again now he’s restarted it and certainly not to return to phase 2 which would end his government as the far right of his coalition would certainly bring him down. That aside though, there is more to this plan which will make Israel’s excuses harder to swallow going forwards.
You see as part of Egypt’s new plan, the formation of what will be called the Community Support Committee will be formed. This body would form a new interim government of Gaza, taking it away from Hamas and Hamas have agreed to it. This new body would be formed of various Palestinian factions, Hamas would hand power over to it, would not be part of it themselves therefore and with the administrative control of Gaza out of Hamas’ hands, who exactly will Israel be fighting going forwards? Nobody would be the hope, but since when did Israel not break a ceasefire even if they agreed to this, which they haven’t, but the plan also calls for the withdrawal gradually of Israeli forces, which have once again surged into Gaza.
With regards to the handing over of power to a new interim government, a Hamas statement stated that:
‘Following the assassination of Issam al-Daalis (highest-ranking government official in Gaza, assassinated on 18 March, who headed the Government Administrative Committee, a position equivalent to Prime Minister of Gaza), the movement has decided not to appoint a replacement.
This decision paves the way for the Community Support Committee to take over the management of Gaza’s affairs.
Government operations are now focused solely on maintaining essential services to prevent a governance vacuum amid ongoing war.
Hamas has called for an accelerated expedited handover of responsibilities to the Community Support Committee in accordance with previously agreed upon arrangements [with Fatah].’
No longer making political appointments, looking to expedite the handover of governance to another, Hamas are surely making the right noises here? This is what Israel wants isn’t it?
Well Israel has dismissed the plan outright. Of course they have. Netanyahu only agreed to a ceasefire to begin with to keep Trump sweet and give him some positive headlines and now that’s all off.
Despite Hamas’s acceptance of this plan by Egypt, Israel has refused to engage with the Egyptian proposal. Instead, Netanyahu has vowed to intensify military operations, framing Hamas’s willingness to negotiate as a sign of weakness, claiming there are now cracks and they will continue to exploit them and as we know, that will be done militarily, that will be the continuation of this genocide. Hamas know it too, and Netanyahu’s obvious reaction to Hamas wrong-footing him lays it bare in this statement by Hamas leader Khalil al-Hayya, which he gave on the first day of Eid:
‘Hamas, along with other resistance factions, has engaged in negotiations through mediators over the past 18 months with clear objectives: stopping the war, securing the release of prisoners, and affirming the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people.
Despite Israeli stalling and Netanyahu’s deliberate sabotage to prolong the war, Hamas demonstrated responsibility, flexibility, and seriousness, which led to the 19 January 2025 agreement. Hamas upheld its commitments while Israel violated the deal and resumed the war more brutally than before.
Hamas recently received a new proposal from the Qatari and Egyptian mediators and responded positively. The movement emphasized it is not seeking new demands, only the implementation of what was already signed and guaranteed.
[It] reiterated Hamas's strategic vision: ending aggression, achieving national unity, and working with all Palestinian factions to establish a fully sovereign state with Jerusalem as its capital and securing the right of return.
Hamas agreed to Egypt’s proposal for forming a Civil Support Committee to manage Gaza, composed of independent national figures, and submitted names for its formation, urging Egypt to move forward with Arab and Islamic backing.
[Hamas] firmly rejected any notion of abandoning responsibility or surrendering Gaza to Israeli control. He declared resistance weapons a red line, tied directly to the occupation’s existence and the need to protect the Palestinian state.’
Hanging onto weapons might be enough of a red line for Israel to carry on, or at least be used as its excuse, but at the end of the day, if the rest is agreed, there should be no need for them and Israel have agreed to none of it.
If the goal were truly the dismantling of Hamas’s governance and to remove them from power, the Egyptian plan would have provided exactly that. Instead, Israel’s refusal suggests that its real objective is not just defeating Hamas but ensuring the continued destruction of Gaza as a livable territory for Palestinians.
Of course Israel won’t just come out and just say that of course, they have instead done as they have so often in the past with regards to ceasefire proposals and that is to instead demanded further concessions, including the release of more hostages before even considering a pause in hostilities, a dozen is what Israel have said. Hamas has already agreed to a structured hostage release process, so why do this unless as usual, Israel are not honestly engaging in a peace process they simply do not want. They want the Palestinian people gone, nothing short of that will do and Netanyahu’s job depends on keeping on driving towards that goal.
Right now, the global media should be asking one question in relation to all of this, though of course none are - If Hamas is willing to step aside, why does Israel continue its assault? It is a question that needs dumping on the doorstep of every media mouthpiece and every pro Israel global leader going and they should be made to answer it if they are going to keep backing Israel in our names because we know why don’t we? And it’ll be harder and harder to justify if you remove Hamas from power in Gaza.
First and foremost there is Netanyahu’s grip on power and his own political survival which is prioritised above all else. He can only keep himself in power by prolonging this war as demanded by the far right monsters he chose to go into government with.
Israel wants Gaza ethnically cleansed, they are still beholden to Trump’s vision for Gaza, they have a department of government dedicated to the relocation of the Gazan people, so leaving them in their own land is no longer acceptable.
And of course the ultimate aim of all of this is to avoid the prospect of there ever being a Palestinian State, the Zionist ideology determined that no such thing can ever be allowed, a mindset still rooted in white supremacy, colonialism and racism.
By rejecting this new Egyptian plan, Israel ensures that no viable alternative to Hamas emerges, which would allow it to continue framing its actions as a war on terror rather than what it truly is, which is a genocidal assault on a civilian population that they occupy and are determined to never allow to ever be seen as their equals, as statehood would give them. Frankly every state refusing to recognise Palestine is enabling this racism at this point, we’re beyond anything less.
Hamas’s acceptance of this Egyptian ceasefire plan should have been a turning point. Instead, it has been widely ignored and Israel’s rejection and escalation reveal the chilling truth that this is not about security and never has been, but about annihilation and power. Netanyahu’s government has no interest in peace—only in conquest and it’s not hard to look beyond Gaza to the West bank, to Lebanon, to Syria to see that. This is a rogue state out of control and support for it wherever that comes from in light of these ongoing atrocities must never be forgotten or forgiven.
The cost of enabling Israel is equally unforgivable and goes to show the power and influence of the Israel Lobby and the damage they cause around the world, so much so that in the US there has even been talk of an Israel inflicted economic crash on the horizon and yet still the aid and the arms keeps flowing.
