When Musa (AS) returned and saw their transgression, he condemned their actions and sought repentance for them. This story is referenced in the Quran in Surah Al-baqarah 51–54, where the gravity of their sin and the mercy of Allah are highlighted.

The Israelites had been freed from the oppression of Pharaoh through the miraculous intervention of Allah.
