Taqiyya is a form of deception in Islam used to protect oneself or the Muslim community. Historically, Taqiyya was used among Shiites to avoid conflict with Sunnis. Taqiyya is found in the Qur'an (chapter 16, verse 106), allowing Muslims to outwardly show friendliness to unbelievers without affecting inner devotion. Allah will reject a Muslim who has a Jewish, Christian or pagan friend. The Qur'an commands to fight those who do not believe in Allah (chapter 9, verse 29). Muslims cannot say, "We will not attack you now, but as soon as we have the opportunity, we will conquer your civilization, put your men to death, rape your wives, and enslave your children." This pretense gave rise to the Islamic proverb, "If you cannot cut off the hand of your enemy, kiss it."
