If you have any poor Wi-Fi reception areas in your house or spots where the reception is bad or the signal drops out, then you may need a range extender or repeater, such as this new model from Newfast.

There are plenty of low priced, low end repeaters out there but only the better ones offer the 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz band coverage and the 1200 Mbps high connection rate of this model.

This wifi range extender is not the prettiest I have seen but it has a powerful 1200Mbps throughput and is well made and easy to configure. This one features an OLED status display screen on the front, the first of this type I have seen, and something of a game changer. Unlike the budget priced simple repeater rivals, this model offers three configuration methods, dual wifi bands, and an Ethernet port. For the current Amazon discounted price of £46.99, you certainly get a pretty good features set your money.

In the box are the repeater itself together with an RJ45 ethernet cable and a useful and informative user guide. Build quality seems fine, the four black plastic antennae and the design are a bit naff but it all seems well made and robust.

The design of the device is simple enough although perhaps rather dated. Four rotatable antennas are on the top with an ethernet port on the base - we are not told the speed of the port and so I assume it to be 10/100. On the front is the circular OLED screen and on one side are the RJ45 Ethernet port and combined WPS and Reset button. On the rear is the UK power plug interface and I was pleased to see the repeater body is slimmer than some rivals and will not stick out too far from the wall socket into which it is inserted.

The OLED screen shows icons indicating the Power or reboot status, network connection status, Ethernet connection Status, and WPS connection status. With this, you can tell at a glance if the extender has connected correctly to the router.

The repeater operates on both 2.4Ghz (300Mbps maximum speed) and 5Ghz (867Mbps) networks with full support 802.11 ax/ac/a/b/g/n. protocols. This should be more than faster enough for all normal network operations.

The unit can be used either as a wifi extender taking the network signal either from the ethernet port or from the existing wifi network or as an access point from a cable connected router with the Newfast device generating its’ own wifi network. However, most people will probably use this device to extend the range of their existing wifi network.

There are three ways to configure the router.

Use AP mode to connect the repeater to the network. Plug the repeater into the power and it will automatically generate its’ own WiFi hotspot with the network name "NEWFAST" Use your phone or computer to connect to either the 2G or 5G NEWFAST stream and a pop-up configuration page should appear - if not then type 192.168.10.1 in your browser to connect manually. The default password is "admin". Follow the screen prompts to select your home wifi network, then input the login and password and restart the range extender, It will then connect to the network and start working and you will need to use the password to your home wifi to connect to the range extender.

Connect the range extender using the ethernet cable to an ethernet port on your router and proceed as above.

Use WPS. This is the most simple way. Plug in the router and press the WPS button on the front, then press the WPS button on your router. The two devices will communicate directly and the repeater will connect and automatically boost the signal.

When connected to the configuration page of the range extender you can select the option Combine Wifi to use the fastest available connection mode. Select the option Sync Your Device and after rebooting the Range extender will use the same name as your home network and blend seamlessly into it with devices connecting automatically to the router or range extender according to the signal strength.

To use this or any other repeater, identify the dead spots in your wifi and position the range extender midway between the dead spots and the router. The range extender will boost and extend the signal range into the affected areas.

As well as working as a repeater it can also be used as a wifi access point by connecting to the router or other access point using the RJ45 port converting the wired signal to Wifi. It also works the other way around by converting the connected wifi network signal to Ethernet using the RJ45 port.

This device is far more powerful than the cheaper rivals not only in signal power but also in capabilities, it is more than just a plug and play repeater although it will work as one. To get the best from it there is a learning curve and time needs to be spent to get the best from it but at its simplest, all you need to do is switch it on and press the WPS button.

For the current £39.99 price, this is a very decent buy.
