Parasha Va-yiqra: Leviticus 1:1-5:26

This is the first parasha of Leviticus, the third Book of Moses. Now that the Tabernacle is built and the Levites are established, as are their brothers the Kohanim through Aaron and his sons, God now instructs Moses on the offerings the Israelites can bring. This is the beginning of God's transformation of pagan and human sacrifice, so common in the world at that time, to a system of sacrifice that excludes human sacrifice, according to God's rules.
