The wind window is the area of the sky downwind of the rider in which the kite can be flown, and it plays a crucial role in the direction and speed the rider can achieve.

The history of kite surfing began with George Pocock's use of kites to power carts on land and ships on water in the 1800s. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, the Legaignoux brothers from France developed an inflatable kite design that significantly improved water re-launch capabilities.
