Hawaii, Day Six: Beautiful Snorkeling in the Big Blue Ocean

I’ve never been a fan of snorkeling before.

Two reasons: one, I was doing it wrong, and two, technology hadn’t caught up to the activity yet.

Like an idiot, when I was a kid and I’d snorkel, I’d face straight down, thinking that’s what you’re supposed to do.

Nope!

You’re supposed to look at a 45-degree angle.

That keeps your snorkel out of the water, and you don’t get mouthfuls of sea salt.

(Which is gross, in case you didn’t know.)

And speaking of the snorkel, it used to fill with water and be impossible to empty. You’d exhale as hard as you could, but there’d still be enough in there to make it impossible (and very gross) to breathe.

No longer!

Now, a simple shouting of the word, “Two!” (or, “Too!” we weren’t told which one), empties the tube, and allows you to continue on saltwater free.

I do have to admit, though, I’m still a bigger fan of the snuba.

That’s the full-face mask underwater design with a bobber in the tube. A bobber that doesn’t allow ANY water in by your face.

But, apparently that can involve you rebreathing your own air, which is no bueno, because if you do it for long enough, carbon monoxide something-something.

(We did take our snubas along for the trip, and used them on the reef by our hotel. Every single snorkeling company has banned them however.)

Anyway, words cannot describe the insane beauty of the ocean waters surrounding Hawaii.

Thankfully, there was a professional picture-snapper on the expedition, which means we got some fantastic photos.

Thanks, @Dalysights

You rocked it.
