Demand for data centers is booming as ChatGPT and other AI tools become integrated into our daily life. Under the Trump administration, investments into data centers in the U.S. is expected to surpass $1 trillion in the next five years.
But data centers put extraordinary demand on the power grid and require entirely new infrastructure. In the next three years, data center use of electricity is expected to double or even triple.
They went to rural Georgia, the state with the fastest data center growth in the country, and spoke with residents who are living next to massive data centers owned by Meta and Blackstone and facing nonstop noise, pollution and rapidly rising electricity bills.

FERC under fire: Trump’s executive order and the erosion of independence
FERC was established by Congress as an independent agency in 1977 in order to maintain separation of powers between the three branches of government.
It mandates that the chairs of these agencies align with the Executive Branch’s policy priorities and submit “all proposed and final significant regulatory actions”
to the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs (OIRA), which operates under the president’s authority.
This move effectively grants the White House greater control over FERC’s policymaking, undermining Congress’ original intent to shield independent agencies like FERC from political influence.

Facebook, Meta, is currently adding a three-building expansion at its Newton Data Center, a 970,000-square-foot data center in Newton County, Ga. In the second phase of the development,
the company will add 1.5 million square feet to the existing two-building campus.
The first phase is expected to came online in 2021, while the second phase is scheduled for completion in 2023.
