The Boring Company uses Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) specifically modified for speed and efficiency, aiming to outpace traditional methods.

Their first machine, Godot, was a conventional TBM used for testing, but newer versions like Prufrock are designed to bore continuously without stopping to install tunnel lining, drastically reducing time and cost.

Prufrock is a soft-soil, Earth Pressure Balance TBM with modular components, built to launch from the surface and dig at 1 mile per week, a rate far faster than typical civil engineering machines.

The company’s long-term goal is to achieve “tunnel automation” and make tunneling as routine as road construction.
