17th In our series the Epistle of Paul to the Ephesians

I. Righteousness Exalts, Sin is a Reproach - Proverbs 14:34
* A. The wages of sin is death
* B. Civil government is not the answer to the problem of sin

II. The Solution to Sin is Salvation - Ephesians 2:1-5
* A. First recognizing that we were born spiritually dead 
* 1. We lived a life of rebellion against God
* 2. We fulfilled the lust of the flesh and of the mind
* B. In our helpless and lost state,  God broke through
* 1. “But God” - phrase occurs 43 time in KJV
* a. Joseph spoke those words to his brothers - Genesis 50:20
* b. They had done evil to him, Potiphar’s wife did evil, & also the ungrateful butler in prison 
* c. But God came through for Joseph
* 2. In our helplessness God sent His Son into this world
* C. God is rich in mercy - the treasury of mercy is unlimited
* 1. Why then are there those who do not receive mercy?
* a. Those who run out the clock - Hebrews 9:27 
* b. There are those who harden their own hearts against God’s mercy, rejecting it altogether
* c. Pharaoh is but one example  
* 2. It is because of His great love that God shows mercy
* a. There was nothing attractive about us in our fallen sinful state, spiritually dead
* b. Christ died for us when we were still committed rebels against Him - Romans 5:8
* 3. It is by Grace alone we are saved
* 4. How we should respond after repent, believe & receive
* a. With Gratitude to God
b. With compassion toward sinners who need a Savior
