The hard part about any compost/casting having enough moisture for the trip to the store>on the shelf/at your house. Some air can help, but slowly the oxygen will be used up and the water will be used up and the microbes will either die or go dormant.
The more suddenly bad conditions arise the quicker the microscopic life dies.
