Judas regrets betraying Jesus, but there's no way to undo what he did. The chief priests continue to follow the letter of the law, doing things that make them look good in the eyes of the people. So Jesus was beaten, mocked, hung on a cross, died a painful death and was buried in a tomb, which was securely sealed, so no one could steal His body and claim He had risen from the dead.
