Dogs - faithful companions of man - mini documentary

Dogs are among the most versatile and favourite animals in the world. They have accompanied humans for thousands of years as protectors, work partners and friends. Their adaptability, intelligence and emotional bond with humans make them unique creatures.
Dogs are descended from wolves. Scientists suspect that wolves initially approached human campsites to utilise leftover food. Over thousands of years, targeted breeding resulted in dog breeds with different abilities - from hunting dogs to lap pets. This close co-operation shaped the development of both species: dogs learnt to interpret human gestures and emotions, while humans appreciated their loyalty and versatility.
Today, there are over 340 dog breeds, from tiny Chihuahuas to massive St Bernards. Each breed has been bred for specific tasks: Border Collies as herding dogs, Dachshunds for hunting underground, or Huskies as draught animals in the snow. Modern breeding often focusses on aesthetics, but this can also lead to health problems such as breathing difficulties in short-nosed dogs or hip dysplasia in large breeds. Responsible breeders are therefore increasingly focussing on health checks and species-appropriate husbandry.
Dogs are not just pets - they save lives. Rescue dogs search for earthquake victims, avalanche dogs locate buried victims and explosive detection dogs protect against attacks. They also achieve great things in the medical field: diabetic alert dogs recognise hypoglycaemia and assistance dogs support people with physical disabilities. Emotionally, therapy dogs contribute to healing by alleviating stress in hospitals or retirement homes. These applications show how versatile their senses and empathy can be utilised.
Studies show that dogs can understand up to 250 words and gestures. They interpret our moods, recognise faces in photos and solve complex tasks. Border Collies are considered the ‘Einsteins’ among dogs, while other breeds such as Golden Retrievers shine with their social intelligence. They communicate via posture, barking, growling or tail wagging. Their ability to follow human gazes is also interesting - a sign of deep social understanding.
A balanced diet, sufficient exercise and mental exercise are essential for dogs. Obesity, joint problems and behavioural disorders are often caused by incorrect husbandry. Regular visits to the vet, vaccinations and parasite prophylaxis are the responsibility of every owner. Dogs also need consistent training and socialisation to avoid fear or aggression. Positive reinforcement rather than punishment is the key to success here.
In mythology and art, dogs symbolise loyalty (such as the Japanese ‘Hachiko’) or guarding (e.g. the hellhound Cerberus). At the same time, dogs are kept as food in some cultures, which triggers international debates. Their status therefore ranges from ‘best friend’ to controversial topic.
