BBC journalist Mark Lowen has spoken publicly about his recent detention and deportation from Turkey, shedding light on the country’s tightening grip on journalists amid mass protests over the arrest of Istanbul’s mayor, Ekrem Imamoglu. Lowen, who served as the BBC’s Turkey correspondent from 2014 to 2019, had returned to Istanbul last week to cover the protests. On Wednesday, he was approached by plainclothes police officers at his hotel and taken to Istanbul’s police headquarters. Initially held for seven hours, he described the early interactions with officers as “cordial,” noting that some even expressed personal sympathy for his situation. He was held for a further five hours before being put on a deportation flight back to London.
