The Ladder of Divine Ascent: St. John Climacus, a guide to spiritual progress.
Lenten Vigilance
We will also honor the saints of the day and meditate on the spiritual themes that guide us during this Lenten season.
Epistle: Numbers 20:1-13
"The people contended with Moses, saying, ‘Why have you made us come out of Egypt, to bring us into this evil place? It is no place for seed, nor vines, nor fig trees, neither is there any water to drink.’"
In this passage, we see the Israelites’ lack of trust in God as they grumble in the wilderness. Their impatience leads to anger, and Moses, in frustration, strikes the rock instead of speaking to it as God commanded. Water flows forth, but Moses is chastised for his lack of total obedience.
Reflection:
This passage reminds us that faith requires trust, even in desolation. How often do we complain or doubt God's providence when faced with trials? Just as the Israelites longed for the false security of Egypt, we too may be tempted to return to our past sins. But God calls us to perseverance, teaching us to rely on His divine plan rather than our limited understanding.
Gospel: John 8:12-20
"I am the light of the world: he that followeth me, walketh not in darkness, but shall have the light of life."
Jesus boldly proclaims His divine authority to the Pharisees, who refuse to recognize Him as the Messiah. He tells them that those who reject Him remain in spiritual darkness. The Light of Christ is freely given, but only those who humble themselves and believe will receive it.
Reflection:
Christ is our only true light in a world darkened by sin. In this Lenten season, we are called to examine our hearts: Do we truly follow Christ, or do we allow the world's distractions to dim His light in our souls? This Gospel reminds us that our faith must be unwavering, rooted in the truth Christ Himself has revealed.
Saints of the Day: Traditional & Historical Feast Days
1. St. Guntramnus (c. 525-592) – A Merovingian king of Burgundy known for his deep penitence and charity. Despite his royal status, he lived humbly, supporting the Church and caring for the poor.
2. St. Tutilo (c. 850-915) – A Benedictine monk of the Abbey of Saint Gall, known for his artistic and musical talents, as well as his deep piety.
Reflection on the Saints:
Both St. Guntramnus and St. Tutilo remind us of the importance of using our gifts for God’s glory. Whether we are called to leadership, like St. Guntramnus, or to creative work, like St. Tutilo, we must sanctify our talents and offer them to God.
Themes for the Day
1. Faith Amidst Trials: The Israelites in the desert struggled to trust God. We must guard against the temptation to doubt and instead surrender to divine providence.
2. Christ as the Light: In the Gospel, Jesus calls us to follow Him, rejecting sin and clinging to truth. This requires daily renewal of our commitment to holiness.
3. Using Our Gifts for God: Like today’s saints, we must recognize that our talents are not our own but should be used in service of Christ and His Church
Conclusion & Prayer
As we continue through Lent, let us reflect on today’s readings and the example of the saints. May we learn from their humility and trust, following Christ wholeheartedly.
Closing Prayer:
"O God, who art the eternal Light shining in our darkness, grant that we may always walk in Thy truth. May we, like Thy saints, offer Thee our whole selves, using our talents for Thy greater glory. Strengthen our faith in times of trial, and may we always follow the light of Christ. Through Our Lord Jesus Christ, who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, one God, world without end. Amen."
