The New Age movement, closely associated with alternative and holistic health approaches, promotes a comprehensive perspective on well-being that integrates the mind, body, and spirit. It often features practices such as meditation, yoga, and crystal healing.

The origins of the New Age philosophy can be traced back to the Western esoteric tradition and various 19th-century religious movements. Notable among these are Theosophy, which draws from Hindu and esoteric Buddhist teachings, and New Thought, which has roots in Mesmerism that emphasized healing from the outset. Additionally, spiritualism played a significant role during this period.

A century later, these interconnected influences gave rise to the Human Potential Movement, a diverse phenomenon with branches that included transpersonal psychology. Crucially, the emergence of New Age healing is linked to the idea of a salutogenic (healing) life force, present in each of these traditions, both separately and in combination.

Melton aptly characterized the New Age as a “new revivalist religious impulse directed toward the esoteric/metaphysical/Eastern groups and to the mystical strain in all religions” .

What all the above generally have in common is a lack of scientific measurements of an individual using systems biology methods and these are found in modern day "orthomolecular medicine."
