Otto von Bismarck (1 April 1815 – 30 July 1898) was a German statesman and diplomat who unified Germany and served as its first Chancellor from 1871 to 1890. Known as the Iron Chancellor, he practiced Realpolitik and strong governance. Starting as a Junker landowner, Bismarck quickly rose in Prussian politics under King Wilhelm I. He was Prussia's ambassador to Russia and France and served in both houses of the Prussian parliament. From 1862 to 1890, he was the minister president and foreign minister. He led Prussia in three quick wars against Denmark, Austria, and France. After defeating Austria in 1866, he replaced the German Confederation with the North German Confederation, aligning smaller states with Prussia. In 1870, he helped defeat France and oversaw the creation of a unified German Empire. He was then titled Prince of Bismarck and maintained Germany's position in a peaceful Europe through a balance-of-power diplomacy. Although opposed to colonialism, he eventually accepted it to appease public opinion. Domestically, Bismarck established the first welfare state to weaken socialists. In the 1870s, he allied with anti-Catholic Liberals and fought the Catholic Church while trying to diminish the Polish majority in Prussian-occupied Poland, leading to the Kulturkampf. This effort failed, as Catholics formed the German Centre Party. Bismarck then ended the Kulturkampf, distanced himself from the Liberals, and allied with the Centre Party against socialists. He ruled autocratically with power concentrated among the Junker elite, sidelining the Imperial Reichstag. After Wilhelm II dismissed him, he retired to write his memoirs.
