"Superman" (1941), also known as "The Mad Scientist," is the first animated short in a series of seventeen Technicolor shorts based on the DC Comics character. Directed by Dave Fleischer and produced by Fleischer Studios, it was released by Paramount Pictures on September 26, 1941.

In the film, Lois Lane is kidnapped by a mad scientist who plans to destroy Metropolis with an energy cannon...

The short introduces several iconic elements of Superman's mythos, including his ability to fly, the "Superman Wink," and the "Truth and Justice" motto, which later evolved into "Truth, Justice, and the American Way." The mad scientist, voiced by Jack Mercer, was inspired by horror film villains.

"Superman" (1941) was nominated for the 1942 Academy Award for Best Animated Short Subject and ranked 33rd in a list of the fifty greatest cartoons of all time.
