Twilight Has Come

This lovely piece for high voices was based around two separate motives I had written down in my sketch book twenty years ago and was the first piece I completed for the year 2023.

I had wanted to start work on my next orchestral piece but could not get this opening melodic line out of my head. Originally, I had thought about making a solo piano piece but as I dwelled on the music, I began to hear voices with it and decided to write a piece for choir instead.

The opening melody itself sounded much like a lullaby to me which lead to the idea of a mother singing to her newborn babe at bedtime. This, then, lead to the opening text, “Twilight has come dear”. These words felt appropriate to begin each verse with which then set the story and different meanings of the word twilight centering around mothers and daughters.

Mad props to the CCCC Vocalists for recording this demo for me! Some of the best money I've spent!
