Rahan.

The Son of the Ferocious Ages!

Episode One Hundred and Sixty-Two.

By Roger Lecureux, drawn by Andre Cheret.

The master of the Beasts.

Seven moons and seven suns had succeeded one another.
Rahan had crossed, day and night, a hostile and wild nature without ever meeting a living soul.
One day, early in the morning, lying in ambush in the depths of a tree, he saw two hunters.

Page Two.

The son of Crao saw the fawn at the same time as he saw the hunters lying in wait in the thicket.
Ra-ha-ha!
Run away quickly, little "Front-of-wood"! Quickly!

Alerted, the animal made a leap, narrowly avoided the arrow, and disappeared.
Angry screams broke out.

Those who kill for fun are not worthy of the title "hunter!"

You made us miss that fawn!
But we will not miss you, "Fire-Hair"!

Page Three.

Rahan was as agile as a "Four-Hands"!
Missed!
You are nothing but clumsy brutes. Who deserve a lesson!

Tell your companion to drop his javelin, man, or else.
Argh!

Rahan will never steal a man's life! But these people do not know it, so they will give in!
Argh!

The hunters did in fact, give in.
What are you getting involved in, "Fire-Hair"? Why did you stop us from slaughtering the fawn?

Because you have already killed more game than you can bring back to your clan!
You are not hunters but murderers!

In his ignorance the son of the fierce ages had relaxed his vigilance.
It was his fault.

Rahan, breathless, collapsed.
You have no chance of escaping us, you preacher!
You will now give your lessons in the "Territory-of-the-shadows"!

Page Four.

But.
Ha-ha-ha! You will not do that again!
An amazing reflex had allowed Rahan to avoid both the javelin and the arrow.

The men were right.
Such a feat was not repeated!
Cowards!
You want to add Rahan to your hunting roll!
They will avenge him!

Oh! Argh!
A “Long-mane” and a "Striped-skin" hunting together!
Rahan has never seen that before!

This unexpected intervention by the two wild beasts had saved Rahan.
The hunters tried to fight head-on.
In vain.

While one collapsed, throat slit by the tiger, the other was knocked down by the lion!
Hum! If Rahan does not run, it will soon be his turn!

Page Five.

Rahan did not have time to make a move to flee.
Do not confuse Rahan with those murderers, “Striped-Skin!”
Argh!

Pinned to the ground, he tried to draw his ivory knife.
Do not strike, "Striped-skin"!
Do not strike!
The terrible clawed paw was going to open his throat.

When strange sounds arose, as if from a conch shell or a horn.
Me-haw! Me-heu!
The claws remained suspended above the throat of the son of the ferocious ages.

Me-haw!
Then the tiger and the lion suddenly disappeared into the deep undergrowth.
Rahan probably owes his life to those horn sounds!

One hunter was dead.
But the other was only slightly injured.
Come on, Rahan forgives you!
He will help you join your people!
No! Do not come near! Pity! Pity!

Page Six.

Pity “Master of the Beasts”! Pity!
The man's fear was such that he suddenly fainted!

This man's camp must not be far away.
Otherwise, he and his friend would not have taken on so much game!

The son of Crao, in fact, soon discovered the straw huts of a village.
How will Rahan be accepted by this clan?

Experience had taught him that “Those-Who-Walk-Upright” were unpredictable.
Sometimes welcoming. Sometimes hostile.
They could also.

Be deceitful, like the one he brought back to his people.
And who, for a moment, had regained consciousness!

He is unsuspecting, Ouhark could.

Draw that knife and strike without risk!
Page Seven.

But the clan will probably find it more valuable for them to capture the "Master-of-the-beasts" alive!

Rahan entered the village.
When.

Not a Move, “Master-of-the-beasts”!
You are now the prisoner of Ouhark!
Your life belongs to him!
Oh? What?

While Ouhark forced Rahan to let go of him, the whole clan came running.
Come near, brothers of the clan, to the “Deep Valley”!
Ouhark will tell you.
How he captured the “Master-of-the-beasts”!

Ouhark, emphasizing his courage and cunning, narrated things in his own way.

Zourk and I were returning when this man with “Fire Hair” attacked us.
After a very long and very hard fight I managed to overpower him and disarm him.
I wanted, of course, to show myself loyal and generous towards him.
That was when he.

Page Eight.

A strange cry was made and a horde of wild beasts arose!
Zourk was slaughtered.
I fought for a long time.

Deeply injured in my turn, I forced the master of the wild beasts to bring me back here!

Why is Ouhark lying so blatantly!?

I captured the "Master-of-the-beasts" and brought him back alive to the clan of the "Deep-Valley"
After this act of courage.

Kranouh-the-chief will no longer be able to refuse his daughter to Ouharak-the-valiant!
We will see. Ouhark, we will see.

The son of Crao finally expressed his anger.
"Ouhark-the-liar" wants to deceive Kranouh!
Rahan will reveal the truth to those of the "Deep Valley"!
The whole truth!

Page Nine.

He related everything, without omitting or adding anything.
Rahan's story seems infinitely more sincere to me than Ouhark's!

And if Rahan was real, and the "Master-of-the-beasts" he would never have let himself be captured by one of ours!
What do you mean, Kranouh?

That this hunter with the "Fire-Hair" is not the "Master-of-the-beasts" who.
Terrorizes us!
But he still violated our territory!

And we will hold him captive until the pointed moon!
“Kranouh-the-chief” has spoken!

Hunters were already pushing Rahan towards a nearby cave.

Where he was entrusted to the care of a being of whom it was difficult to say whether he was a man or.
A gorilla!

Hum. It would not be easy to escape him!

Page Ten.

The "Monster" spoke proving he was not a monkey!
If you stay calm, everything will be fine for you.
We will release you in a few days.

But if you try to run away, I will break your bones.
Like breaking a branch.
Crack!

Night fell, and Rahan heard the hunters talking.
This giant has strength on his side, but Rahan has flexibility and vivacity on his side!

Everything happened so quickly that the colossus was left stunned.
He saw his captive rush towards the fire.
What, what!?

The gorilla man reacted a second too late.
Rahan regrets, but.
This is the only way he can get away from you!
Argh!

Page Eleven.

An instant later.
Alert! Alert!
The "Fire-Hair" hunter has escaped!

Kranouh-the chief proclaimed with a gesture the clan should draw up.
Remain Calm, brothers.

This man seemed loyal to me. It was his duty to escape us! He is probably already far away!

Kranouh was wrong!
Not a cry, not a gesture, Ouhark!
Rahan could not flee by abandoning his knife!

The clan, again, evoked the mysterious "Master-of-the-beasts", a being that no one had ever seen and who reigned over the animals of this territory!

A being that terrorized the "Deep Valley", a ruthless being that all the animals of the jungle obeyed!

Will Rahan manage to escape? Who is this mysterious "Master-of-the-beasts”?
Will he solve the mystery? Next episode, the continuation and the end of this adventure of Rahan.

Page Twelve.

The master of the Beasts.
A being terrorizes the deep valley, a ruthless being whom all the animals of the jungle obey.
This is the master of the beasts!
Captured by Ouhark, a deceitful and cruel hunter, Rahan managed to slip away from his guards.

Page thirteen.

Fleeing from Ouhark, the son of Crao suddenly emerged from the darkness.
Rahan has heard it all! If this "Master-of-the-beasts" really exists, Rahan will find him!

Rahan will find him and,
He will deliver them! Rahan promises you!

The son of the ferocious ages disappeared into the night.
I had a feeling that this "Fire-Haired" hunter was brave and loyal!

May the good spirits accompany him, father!
And may they protect me from Ouhark-the-savage!

Only Ouhark was raging.
This Rahan has deceived us all!
If he is not himself the "Master-of-the-beasts".
He is one of his creatures!
That the "Striped-Skin" spared him is proof of that!

However.
Rahan must wait for the day! The traces of the "Long-Mane" and "Striped-Skin" will lead him where he hopes!
Page Fourteen.

At dawn he set out.
It was easy for him to reach the clearing where the wild beasts had attacked the hunters.

A troop of hyenas fought over the corpse of "Zourk"
Rahan did not like these "Dogs-of-Death."
Back, "Devourers of corpses"!
Back!

The beasts scattered.
But one of them, more courageous, risked an attack.
Ha-ha-ha!

You dare to attack an energetic hunter, you!?

Ra-ha-ha!

So go and give lessons in courage to your companions!
The hyena fell back into the middle of the gathered pack, sowing panic.

It was a moment later that Rahan saw the tracks he was searching for.
Page Fifteen.

The traces of the long-mane and the "Striped-skin" were so.
Visible, that he could follow them for a long time from the top of the foliage.

It was a stunning spectacle that ended this race.
Crao himself would never have imagined such a gathering!
This. This is incredible. And wonderful!

All the animals of creation seem to have gathered around a vast pond!

"Long-manes" tolerating "Zebras".
"Striped-skins" giving way to "Two-horns"!
Rahan must be dreaming!

They were quenching their thirst, side by side, as peacefully as if they had formed only one and the same species!

Suddenly.
Me-Aw! Meu-heue!

"The master of beasts"!?
The long blasts of the horn, like those heard the day before, proved to the son of Crao that he was not dreaming.

Page Sixteen.

Obeying the signal, all the species combined, the strangest of herds formed, and retreated into the forest.
Maybe they will lead Rahan to this Mysterious “Master-of-the-beasts"!?

Never had the son of the ferocious ages followed such an easy "Trail".
The beasts, by the hundreds, formed a noisy herd.
If the "Master" exists, he is not only the "Master-of-the-wild-beasts", but that of all animals!

Greek! Greek!
The animals were now gathering in a huge clearing.

Greek! Greek! Greek!
Only monkeys had spotted Rahan.
And.

They were trying, with loud cries, to signal the intruder!
Greek Greek!
Ouch!
Stop, "Four-Hands"! Stop!

Page Seventeen.

Vlang!

The blow had been so violent that he had not been able to hold on to the vines.

The thin branches barely slowed his fall.
And he thought his skull was shattering like those "Fruit-of-wood" that are broken on a rock!
Vrang! Argh!

The gaps in the foliage merged into a reddish tangle, and the last vision he had before losing consciousness.

Was this people, was a multitude of wild animals that closed in on him.
There were the big lions, the tigers, but also the panthers and the leopards, and... Others, and others.

And others still.
Claws tore at his feet all at once.
What fangs were savagely shredding!

Page Eighteen.

Then something fantastic happened: He saw himself being devoured by the wild beasts!

It was only then that the son of Crao realized that it was only a horrible nightmare!
The wild animals, moreover, faded away.
As in a thick fog.

When they disappeared, Rahan knew he was still alive!

Rahan has not rejoined the “Territory of the shadows”.
Life has not fled Rahan!

His eyelids half-opened, but then closed again under the unbearable blaze of the sun!
Ra-ha-ha!

The cry he let out was, this time, neither a battle cry nor a cry of victory.
It was a greeting to the life that had not left him!
You will have to wait a little longer, Crao!
Rahan will join you later. Oh!?
A rough thing passed over his cheek.

Page Nineteen.
Oh! That. It is you!
The young fawn he had saved the day before was conscientiously licking his face.

But another surprise awaited him.
He had been, during his fainting spell, lying on a sort of altar surrounded by.

By the hundreds, animals of all species.
You owe this young fawn your life, man!
His attitude proved to us that he owed you a debt.
So we spared you!
The voice came from a nearby cave.

But who are you, to have had the audacity to come to us!?
I am Rahan. The Son of Crao!

And I am Kronan-the-hermit".
Kronan-the-savage!
But I know that those of the "Deep Valley", refer to me as "The master-of-the-beasts"!
The man was about to leave the cave.
The wild beasts moved away.

Page Twenty.

What followed was moving and grandiose.
The big cats formed a guard of honor.
An old man appeared, his voice and gesture expressing kindness and serenity.
We salute you, son of Crao!
I am happy that a hunter has finally dared to approach me!

Since my earliest childhood, I have lived in the midst of the "Great Herd."
I have brought to these Beasts my. Uh. My human intelligence!

I taught species that hated each other to tolerate each other, to live together.
And kill together, is that not so!?

Do not speak without knowledge, Rahan!
The law that I impose on the "Deep Valley" is good and just!

I know that "Those-who-walk-upright" Must hunt to live and make their own live!
My wild beasts have orders.
To.

Never attack hunters who kill to live, and often to survive!
But woe to those who violate this rule!
Page Twenty-One.

Woe to him who kills for the pleasure of killing!
He is hunted by the big cats, relentlessly, until he has paid for his crimes!

That was what happened yesterday with these two murderers.
They had killed three times more game than they.
Could not bring back to their clan!

But you, on the contrary, helped this fawn to escape from them!
I had seen all this.
And.

That was why I ordered Kerka-the-tiger to spare you!
Meu-heu-heu!

You can now consider yourself one of us, Rahan!
The son of Crao was very moved. He thought he was living one of those strange stories that "Shawa-the-old" sometimes told him, when he was still only a "Little Man".

Page Twenty-Two.

The "Master of the beasts" suddenly tore him from his thoughts.
But tell me, Rahan, what did you really come to do on our territory!?
Eh, Argh.

Rahan promised to Kranouh-le-chef, and to those of the "Deep Valley", to.

Capture and bring back to them the "Master-of-the-beasts"!
Well then!

And you mean, of course, keeping your promise!

Rahan was so troubled that he did not feel the old man's irony.
His gaze wandered over the immense peaceful herd.

Rahan does not like the word "Master" very much.
But he likes what you do for the great troop!

Everything here is quiet and peaceful.
No! Rahan will not bring you back to those of the "Deep Valley"!
The son of Crao suddenly realized that this would be the first time he would not keep a promise.
And, oddly enough, he felt no remorse about it.
