As soon as an ant (or other small insect) steps on the edge of the funnel, the larva begins to shell it with sand in order to knock it down. The insect falls to the bottom of the funnel, where it becomes the prey of a voracious larva. Probably, for such a warlike behavior, the insect received the name Ant Lion.
