Welfare, not Warfare. National Day of Protest Against Benefit cuts, Jo Stevens Office Albany Road Cardiff.
According to an analysis conducted by the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR), a substantial reduction of £6.4 billion is projected to be made to the health and disability benefits budget by the fiscal year 2029/30. This reduction will be mitigated by an increase in the standard rate of Universal Credit (UC), thereby reducing the overall cuts to £4.8 billion. The government’s impact assessment estimates that approximately 3.2 million families will be affected by these cuts, resulting in an average annual loss of £1,720 when adjusted for inflation in the years 2029 and 2030. Consequently, it is anticipated that an additional 250,000 individuals, including 50,000 children, will be pushed into poverty by the end of the decade.
