Astronomers using the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) have discovered a massive and rare galaxy in the early universe, named the "Big Wheel." This galaxy’s light traveled over 12 billion years to reach Earth, meaning it formed when the universe was just 15% of its current age. What makes Big Wheel extraordinary is that, unlike other early galaxies, it maintained a spiral shape while growing rapidly—something scientists didn’t expect. It is three times larger than typical galaxies of its era and spins as fast as the largest spiral galaxies seen today. Formed in a region ten times denser than normal space and surrounded by many galaxies, its environment may have helped it expand smoothly. The discovery challenges existing theories about galaxy formation, suggesting that large spiral galaxies may have formed much earlier in the universe's history than previously believed.
