JEFF SUZUKI
Anti-racist coalition

Good evening, council members

Before I begin, I’ll disclose that I am not speaking as a Complete Streets and Transportation Commissioner but as a private citizen and President of the Los Gatos Anti-Racism Coalition

First I would like to express my appreciation to the Los Gatos town Council for agendizing this item

Which is the first item that directly addresses how the federal government will impact our town

I will state my concerns candidly

The Los Gatos town council does not appear to currently have any semblance of a plan to deal with not only the potential loss of federal funding

But more broadly the policies that directly impact the lives of our fellow community members, the human impact

In January, the Los Gatos Anti-Racism Coalition help a community town hall

And on short notice on a cold January night right after working hours over 50 people showed up

Most of whom I’d met for the first time

And across the board people were eager to share their thoughts, concerns, and ideas about the predicament facing Los Gatos

And I heard repeatedly that they felt that their representatives would not stand up for them

Several people left notes about the fact that their council members refused to agendize the resolution that would have reaffirmed that fundamental stance

That their local government would continue to value them the same way that it had in previous years

One person wrote that the town did not proactively state its values

We need it, the town didn’t think so

I share this context because you should know that people have noticed your silence

And many people are frustrated

Several people tonight have noticed that this agenda item appears to be purely financial devoid of any discussion on the impacts on people’s lives

And you have the opportunity tonight to turn around that perception

Some of you might believe that you can out wait the next four years

Or federal issues might not impact you personally

And that the worst might happen to some strangers in some far away place

Perhaps the issues of San Jose are as distant to us as the light of the moon differs from that of the sun

But right here in 1942 Los Gatos residents were forcibly incarcerated

Japanese Americans were strong-armed from their farms and schools at gun point

And people here watched it happen, and in fact many people supported it

Do you have an answer for at least a handful of scenarios

And so what I’m saying here is that we need to dedicate some serious time and effort to planning contingencies with regards to the budget and a litany of other ways that our community could be impacted

Thank you.
