Legal Universalism: the Masque of the Modern State (Episode 13)

We begin with the allegory of the masquerade, the Masque of the Modern State, and the four partiers who support the modern world and its many moral fictions. We then look at Alasdair MacIntyre's classic work, After Virtue, and how it helps us understand that another fiction, fundamental rights, supports an entire modernist order of fictional autonomous moral beings, which is what they say we are. I argue that in fact we have an inheritance from our past, called the LAW, a birthright that once gave us purpose. I look at how multiple sources of law have already been recognized, for some, undermining the mainstream belief that the state is the sole source of law.
