Justz Natz Podcast Script: The X-Files Season 1, Episode 21 – "Tooms"
Host (Justz Natz):
"Welcome back, X-Philes and curious minds, to another episode of Justz Natz Podcast! I’m your host, Justz Natz, and today we’re diving into the twenty-first episode of The X-Files Season 1, titled Tooms. This episode brings back everyone’s favorite mutant serial killer, Eugene Victor Tooms, for another round of liver cravings, escalator chases, and Mulder and Scully’s most bizarre case yet. So grab your bile-covered blankets, keep an eye on your escalators, and let’s unravel this creepy mystery together!"
[SEGMENT 1: Episode Recap]
Host:
"Alright, let’s set the scene. The episode picks up after the events of Squeeze, with Eugene Victor Tooms locked up in a Baltimore sanatorium. He tries to escape by squeezing his arm through the food slot in his cell door but is interrupted by his psychologist, Dr. Aaron Monte, who tells him he’s ready to be released into society.
Meanwhile, Scully is called before FBI Assistant Director Walter Skinner, who criticizes the unconventional methods of the X-Files, despite their success. Skinner is accompanied by the ever-mysterious Smoking Man, who lurks in the background like a shadowy enigma.
Mulder and Scully attend Tooms’ release hearing, where Dr. Monte argues that Tooms’ attack on Scully was a result of being falsely accused. Mulder tries to present evidence of Tooms’ crimes and his bizarre physiology, but the panel ignores him, and Tooms is released into the care of an elderly couple.
Scully teams up with Frank Briggs, a retired detective who investigated Tooms’ 1933 murders. They discover a skeleton encased in concrete at a chemical plant, which is identified as one of Tooms’ victims from 1933. However, there’s no direct evidence linking Tooms to the murder.
Mulder, determined to stop Tooms, harasses him at work and follows him as he stalks a new victim. Tooms hides in the trunk of Mulder’s car, breaks into his apartment, and frames Mulder for assault by imprinting his shoe print on his face. This leads Skinner to forbid Mulder from contacting Tooms.
Further research on the skeleton reveals bite marks matching Tooms’ teeth. Tooms kills Dr. Monte and consumes the final liver he needs to begin his 30-year hibernation. Mulder and Scully defy Skinner’s orders and track Tooms to a shopping mall built on the site of his former apartment.
Mulder finds Tooms’ nest beneath an escalator, and a bile-covered Tooms bursts out, chasing Mulder. Mulder activates the escalator, trapping and killing Tooms.
In the end, Skinner reads Scully’s report and asks the Smoking Man if he believes it. The Smoking Man replies, ‘Of course I do.’ Outside, Mulder observes a caterpillar’s cocoon and predicts that change is coming to the X-Files."
[SEGMENT 2: Key Themes and Analysis]
Host:
"Now, let’s talk about the themes in this episode. Tooms explores the idea of justice and institutional failure. Despite overwhelming evidence of Tooms’ crimes, the system fails to stop him, forcing Mulder and Scully to take matters into their own hands.
This episode also delves into the theme of obsession. Mulder’s determination to stop Tooms borders on obsession, and it’s fascinating to see how far he’s willing to go to bring him down.
And let’s not forget the supernatural vs. science dynamic. Tooms’ bizarre physiology and hibernation cycle are rooted in the supernatural, but Scully’s scientific approach to the case adds a layer of realism to the story."
[SEGMENT 3: Standout Moments and Easter Eggs]
Host:
"Alright, let’s highlight some standout moments. First, the opening scene with Tooms trying to escape through the food slot is both creepy and darkly humorous. It’s a great reintroduction to his character.
Then there’s the discovery of the skeleton encased in concrete. It’s a chilling reminder of Tooms’ long history of murder and the lengths he’ll go to hide his crimes.
Another standout moment is Mulder’s confrontation with Tooms in the shopping mall. The chase beneath the escalator and Tooms’ bile-covered appearance are unforgettable.
And of course, the final scene with Mulder and the caterpillar’s cocoon. It’s a subtle but powerful metaphor for the changes coming to the X-Files."
