*Wolfgang Schmidbauer-the one and only-
Wolfgang Schmidbauer (born May 15, 1941 in Munich) is a German psychologist, psychoanalyst, and author. From 1960 to 1966, Schmidbauer studied psychology at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. In 1970, Schmidbauer received his doctorate under Albert Görres in Munich with his thesis "Myth and Psychology - Methodological Problems, Demonstrated by the Oedipus Legend."

Since 1973, Schmidbauer has worked as an analytical individual and group therapist and supervisor alongside his work as an author. In 1977, he published the bestseller *The Helpless Helpers* – a work that is still widely read today – and coined the term "helper syndrome." He was also one of the first critics of consumer society from an ecological-psychological perspective (*Homo consumens*, 1972; *Have Now, Pay Later*, 1995). Schmidbauer is one of the most active academic writers in Germany.

From 1976 to 1980, he taught clinical psychology at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. In 1986, he was a visiting professor of psychoanalysis at the University of Kassel.

He is honorary chairman of the Society for Analytic Group Dynamics, which trains group leaders, supervisors, and family therapists, and a training analyst at the Munich Working Group for Psychoanalysis.
