Mulder believes Samuel is innocent, but Sheriff Maurice Daniels allows his men to beat Samuel to death in his cell. Meanwhile, Vance is confronted by a ghostly vision of Samuel, who accuses him of betraying the church and orchestrating the murders. Vance confesses, blaming his bitterness over being resurrected with a scarred and deformed face.
Mulder and Scully trace the grasshoppers to Vance and arrive to find him dying of cyanide poisoning. He confesses to the murders before dying. As the agents wrap up the case, they learn that Samuel’s body has gone missing, and witnesses claim to have seen him walking around, badly bruised.
