Nikola Tesla (July 10, 1856 – January 7, 1943) was a Serbian-American engineer and inventor known for developing the modern alternating current (AC) electricity supply system.

Born in the Austrian Empire, Tesla studied engineering and physics in the 1870s but did not earn a degree. He gained practical experience in telephony and the electric power industry in the early 1880s. In 1884, he immigrated to the U.S. and became a citizen, briefly working at Edison Machine Works before starting his own ventures. With financial support, he established labs in New York to create various electrical devices. His AC induction motor and related patents, licensed by Westinghouse Electric in 1888, became central to the polyphase system, earning him significant income.

Tesla experimented with mechanical oscillators, electrical discharge tubes, and early X-ray imaging while aiming to patent his inventions. He created a wirelessly controlled boat and showcased his work to celebrities and patrons, known for his public demonstrations. Throughout the 1890s, he explored wireless lighting and global electric power distribution through high-voltage experiments. In 1893, he suggested the potential for wireless communication. He attempted to realize these ideas with the Wardenclyffe Tower project but ran out of funding.

After Wardenclyffe, Tesla worked on various inventions in the 1910s and 1920s with mixed success. He lived in New York hotels, accumulating unpaid bills, and died in January 1943. His contributions were largely forgotten until 1960, when the SI unit of magnetic flux density was named the tesla in his honor, leading to renewed interest in his work since the 1990s.
