From 1953 to 1973, the CIA conducted the clandestine Project MKUltra, an unethical program focused on mind control. This initiative explored techniques like administering psychoactive drugs, including LSD, alongside sensory deprivation and hypnosis, often without the informed consent of the subjects. Driven by Cold War anxieties regarding Soviet and Chinese brainwashing methods, the CIA aimed to develop truth serums and create manipulable agents. Although exposed in 1975 by the Church Committee, most records were destroyed, leaving many victims unaware of their involvement. The revelations of MKUltra underscore the potential for governmental abuse through secret experimentation and continue to fuel contemporary conspiracy theories.
