I Debated Rep. Terra Costa-Howard on WTTW About HB 2827!

Last night, I had a short but powerful debate on WTTW Chicago Tonight with Democratic Rep. Terra Costa-Howard, the sponsor of #HB2827.

This bill is a direct attack on homeschooling freedom and parental rights in Illinois!

🔴 Here’s what HB 2827 does:
❌ Forces homeschool registration – Turning voluntary reporting into mandatory government oversight.
❌ Demands student portfolios – Families must prove their homeschool meets public school standards.
❌ Government-approved teachers – Parents’ right to educate their own children is threatened.
❌ Criminalizes noncompliance – Class C misdemeanor, fines, and possible jail time.
❌ Truancy penalties – Labels homeschool families as truant while public schools face rampant absenteeism (40% in CPS!).
❌ State control over education – Declares a child’s education serves “public purposes of the state”, stripping parents of their authority.
❌ Echoes past injustices – Parallels laws that denied enslaved people autonomy over their education and labor, treating children as state property.

📢 Illinois already has some of the worst public school outcomes, with $millions wasted on failing schools. Meanwhile, homeschoolers excel, scoring 15-25% higher on tests.
