Saint David of Wales | Carlyle R. Phelps

Saint David of Wales:

Jonah was carried reluctantly to His ends–
Never mind the means, be joyful, and keep the faith–
And if being swallowed up seems daunting,
Remember, the voice of Wales says, “Do the little things!”

With a modest smile, greet the day and your neighbor.
With a temperate disposition, refrain from groaning.
With patience, listen to the children spin a yarn
About that one stormy night in Pembrokeshire.

Amidst the tempest and next to a healing well—
At the tip of a cliff, a ruddy boy was born.
The Waterdrinker, whom hills obeyed,
Tamed Wales with what they saw him do:

Beginning everything with a wee prayer.
Ending everything with a thankful heart.
Never being too happy or too sad;
Being mindful and seldom full.

The world is not yours to carry–
So tend to your little rule.
Experience is not quick or immediate–
So start practicing little virtues.
The saint does not amass distracting tasks,
He simply does the little things.
