'This Gun for Hire' (1991) Film of the Book by Graham Greene
The 1991 TV movie 'This Gun for Hire', directed by Lou Antonio, is a largely forgotten remake of the 1942 film of the same name, which was itself based on Graham Greene’s 1936 novel A Gun for Sale. Despite having the foundation of a great story, this version lacks the impact of both the original film and Greene’s novel, making it an underwhelming adaptation.
Plot Summary: The story follows hitman Philip Raven (Robert Wagner), a cold and efficient killer who is double-crossed by his employer after completing a job. As he seeks revenge, he crosses paths with a nightclub singer (Nancy Everhard) who becomes entangled in his dangerous world. Meanwhile, a determined detective (John Beck) is on his trail, leading to a tense but ultimately predictable confrontation.
Comparison with Greene’s Novel and the 1942 Film: Graham Greene’s A Gun for Sale is a gripping thriller infused with his signature themes of moral ambiguity, betrayal, and fatalism. The 1942 adaptation starring Alan Ladd and Veronica Lake transformed the story into a stylish film noir, elevating it into a classic.
The 1991 TV movie, however, fails to capture either the novel’s depth or the 1942 film’s moody, noir atmosphere. It moves the setting from wartime intrigue to a generic crime drama with little of Greene’s political undertones or psychological complexity. Wagner’s portrayal of Raven lacks the intensity and tragic depth that made Ladd’s performance so iconic, making the character feel more like a standard TV villain than a tortured antihero.
Execution and Performances: While Robert Wagner is a capable actor, he doesn’t bring much menace or nuance to the role. Nancy Everhard’s performance as the female lead is serviceable, but she lacks the charisma to make the role memorable. John Beck as the detective provides some presence, but the film’s pacing and direction are uninspired, making it feel more like an average TV crime drama than a compelling noir thriller.
Final Verdict: Ultimately, 'This Gun for Hire' is an unnecessary remake that brings little new to the table. It strips away much of what made Greene’s novel compelling and lacks the atmosphere that made the 1942 film a classic. For fans of the story, it’s better to stick with the original novel or the 1942 adaptation.
