A 7-Jupiter Wide Coronal Hole with Stealthy Storming in Store | Solar Storm Forecast 24 March 2025

There has been a lot of activity this week, including multiple earth-directed solar storm launches. These have been mainly stealthy storms, riding piggy-back on the fast solar wind. This fast wind-solar storm combination has brought some nice aurora shows deep into mid-latitudes over the past few days. More is coming over this next week, although the shows will lessen in intensity as we approach the weekend. Of course, the big story is the massive coronal hole rotating into the Earth-strike zone this week. Strangely enough, the fast solar wind from this coronal hole won't cause as much intense storming as many are speculating because we are so near the equinox and this particular coronal hole has the wrong magnetic polarity for storming. Still, aurora photographers should get great views at high latitudes and those at mid-latitudes might find it worthwhile to go out for a look. In addition, amateur radio operators and GPS users should enjoy the relative radio-quiet at mid-latitudes on Earth's dayside this week, but some big flare players on the Sun's farside will be returning next week. This means the chance for radio blackouts on the dayside will also rise.
