This Nocturne differs from the more lyrical and dreamlike nocturnes with its dramatic and restless character. It opens with a dark, almost improvisatory melody, with unexpected harmonic shifts giving a sense of unease. In the middle section there is a more lyrical and melancholic theme before the stormy mood of the opening returns. In this nocturne Chopin shows his ability to mix lyrical beauty with a complex and almost experimental harmonic structure.
